Finding My Way in the Workplace as a Trans Person

Here's the thing, finding your way through the job market as a trans professional in 2025 has been absolutely wild. I've lived it, and real talk, it's turned into so much more inclusive than it was when I first started.

Where I Began: Stepping Into the Job Market

At the start when I started living authentically at work, I was completely scared out of my mind. Honestly, I believed my work life was going to tank. But plot twist, my experience went so much better than I anticipated.

My first job after being open about copyright was at a tech startup. The culture was chef's kiss. The whole team used my proper name and pronouns from day one, and I wasn't forced to navigate those awkward situations of repeatedly updating people.

Industries That Are Really Accepting

Via my journey and talking with other trans folks, here are the sectors that are actually stepping up:

**The Tech Industry**

Technology sector has been incredibly progressive. Firms including major tech players have robust inclusion initiatives. I landed a role as a engineer and the perks were incredible – comprehensive benefits for gender-affirming expenses.

Once, during a sync, someone mistakenly misgendered me, and like three people in seconds jumped in before I could even process it. That's when I knew I was in the right company.

**Creative Fields**

Graphic design, brand strategy, film work, and similar fields have been pretty solid. The culture in creative spaces tends to be more accepting inherently.

I had a role at a marketing agency where being trans was seen as an advantage. They recognized my diverse experience when crafting inclusive campaigns. On top of that, the money was pretty decent, which rocks.

**Healthcare**

Ironic, the medical field has gotten much better. More and more health systems and medical practices are actively seeking trans professionals to support trans patients.

I have a friend who's a nurse and she mentioned that her medical center actually gives bonuses for team members who finish cultural competency courses. That's what we need we need.

Of course, groups focused on social justice work are extremely inclusive. The salary might not match industry positions, but the fulfillment and culture are incredible.

There was this time totally flopping in an interview because I was fixated on whether they'd accept me that I wasn't able to properly answer the actual questions. Don't make my fails – work to concentrate and display your competence first.

Bathroom Policies

This can be an odd issue we are forced to consider, but restroom policies is significant. Inquire about bathroom policies in the hiring process. Inclusive employers will already have written policies and single-stall facilities.
